Navigating Vegan Options: A Hungry Journey.

As we dive into the heart of this discussion, let me please clarify: I do not identify as a vegan. Instead, I’ve followed a pescatarian diet, nourished by fish and vegetables from birth.

Let us explore this type of diet:

It’s a way to enjoy the benefits of both plant foods and marine delicacies!

My experience, my story:

After a cleanse for my colonoscopy, I found myself famished as we left the hospital. We were determined not to settle for just any food with the zillion allergies i have. So my son, Ty and I pulled into the Barnes & Noble parking lot, where there was a promising sign at the entrance of the street: “Vegan.” We were so excited. I hadn’t eaten in 48 hours.

We truly overlooked a crucial detail: vegan isn’t always healthy and with my zillion allergies i couldn’t just eat anything without knowing the ingredients for sure. So we asked a few questions; “What type of oils do you use? Do you fry everything in the same oil?” Thats all the questions we needed to ask.

Instead of wholesome plant-based fare, we were met with a spread of deep fried, flour-laden, soy-filled junk cuban foods—hardly the nourishing meal we craved. Sadly, I would be in some seriously excruciating pain or even the hospital only if I had eaten!!! Not today!!!

For someone who avoids certain oils and many food allergens, this discovery was disheartening. It had been 48 hours since my last meal, and my stomach grumbled in some serious protest. However, I did find some fruit smooths in Barnes and Noble restaurant and that helped until we got home on our farm where I safely ate the organic healthy foods i grew and prepared. PHEW!!!

Let us explore the complexities of vegan dining:

There are several myths and misconceptions surrounding plant-based diets. Let’s debunk some of them (feel free to click on all the links to understand my thoughts:

  1. Lack of Protein: One common myth is that it’s difficult to get enough protein on a plant-based diet. However, whole-food, plant-based sources like beans, legumes, nuts, and seeds provide ample protein.
  2. Nutrient Deficiencies: Some people worry that a plant-based diet may lead to nutrient deficiencies. In reality, a well-balanced diet of colorful fruits and vegetables provides essential nutrients. Vitamin B12 and vitamin D can be supplemented if needed.
  3. Bland Food: Plant-based diets are often wrongly associated with bland, unappetizing food. However, foods like asparagus, and mushrooms can be savory and delicious when prepared correctly.
  4. Risk of Inadequate Nutrients: While plant-based diets carry some risk of inadequate protein, vitamin, and mineral intake, these risks can be overcome by choosing the right vegetarian foods and, if necessary, supplements. Remember, a plant-based diet offers numerous health benefits, including reduced heart disease risk, lower blood pressure, improved gut health, and a smaller environmental footprint.
