Below is a challenge I tried from my Breathe For Change yoga teacher training. I started to get up earlier a few times per week just to do this challenge. Boy, do I feel a lot better at the end of my day, accomplished…nourished and it’s just for me…just for myself
Some days I walk in the garden for an hour meditating on my steps, or taking pics of butterflies & birds. Other days I pull weeds or do the laundry, read from my book I have been reading for 6 months 😳 sometimes practice on my guitar and so on…try it’
Sometimes self-care looks like slowing down, taking a bath, resting on the couch, giving yourself a massage, etc. etc. Other times, what feels good looks like getting super organized, meal-prepping, or completing a bunch of tasks to lighten your to-do list. Anything can count as self-care, as long as you feel nourished in some way from the activity.
Here’s how it works:
This week, our self-care challenge is more in line with the latter category aimed at lightening your to-do list. It’s called 60 and Sigh. Here’s how it works.
Any task that takes 60-seconds or less to do, do it immediately! This could be responding to an email or text, wiping down the counter, feeding the cats, putting away the clothes you just changed out of, paying that bill, practicing 60-seconds of breath meditation (to get your daily practice in), etc. Once the task is complete, take a deep breath in, and an audible “sigh” out to let your body feel that your load has lessened.
The idea is to lighten your mental burdens by not postponing simple tasks that can be accomplished quickly. Even if the task ends up taking you more than 60 seconds to finish, work through it as efficiently as possible and you’ll likely feel better once it’s complete.
The challenge is to try 60 and Sigh for the entire week and see what happens!
